Hurricane Isabel passed over Ocracoke on 18 September 2003. After Isabel, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) conducted a detailed airborne digital imagery survey of the whole of the Outer Banks. These amazing high-resolution images (~2MB each) have been made available for public viewing courtesy of NOAA, and the NC Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources. The site can be seen here. Here is a small selection of Ocracoke Island maps past and present.

1696 chart of Carolina coast. 1733 Edward Moseley chart of Ocacock Inlet .
"To His Excely. Gabriel Johnson Esq Captain General & Governour in Chief in and over His Majesty's Province of North Carolina in America"
1779 chart of North Carolina, showing Occacock.
1795 map by J. Price of Occacock. 1809 chart by Edmund M. Blunt, showing "Ocracock Bar including Shell Castle." H.S. Tanner's 1834 map of Eastern North Carolina showing Occacock.

It can be seen how the spelling of "Ocracoke" has changed over the years. In fact, the first recorded use of the present day "Ocracoke" was in 1852, almost 300 years after the island was first named.
